Ongkili to Chan: Do justice to your MP job!

Parti Bersatu Sabah top leaderships, led by President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan (centre), doing the party’s ‘Bersatu’ war cry after their political bureau meeting at the PBS headquarters in Donggongon, Penampang, on Sunday.KOTA KINABALU: A senior politician today described Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Chan Foong Hin as “irresponsible” for making wild accusations on the on-going Trans Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project.

Chastising Chan for accusing without having enough facts to support his statement, the Kota Marudu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili urged the DAP Secretary to get his facts right first so to: “do justice to your MP job!”

“Obviously he does not know about the Kimanis  Sandakan TSGP project. Such an act was not only a reflection of political immaturity but proved DAP leaders were political novices in government,” said Ongkili, who is the Parti Bersatu Sabah Deputy President tasked to carry out the presidency duties.

He noted that PBS, and as a Sabahan member of the Barisan Nasional Cabinet, they fully supported TSGP project simply because they were convinced it would be of great benefit to Sabah.

“The plan was to build a gas pipeline from Kimanis to Sandakan, and eventually to Tawau, to supply gas for industries and electricity generation, thereby solving the  70 per cent dependency on energy import through the State grid,” he said, adding the project cost was estimated at RM4.53 billion and funded fully by the Federal government.

Ongkili, who was the former Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister (keTTHA) stressed that one has to be very stupid to reject such long-term development project.

“The industrialisation that has taken place in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, such as Kuala Terengganu and Kerteh, was fuelled by gas supply brought to these locations.

Speaking after the PBS Political Bureau meeting chaired by PBS President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan at the party’s headquarters, here, Ongkili further  noted that the ultimate clients of the TSGP project were Petronas as gas supplier and KeTTHA as fuel energy user.

“(But) Because gas matters in respect of production and distribution are under the Prime Minister’s Department, the project implementation was placed under the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and Ministry of Finance (MOF), including matters of budget and contracts. These issues were outside KeTTHA’s policy purview and supervision,” he explained.

Therefore, Ongkili stressed that it is utterly irresponsible of Chan to make wild accusations of wrongdoing when he knows nothing regarding the project.

“And allegations of financial misappropriation by the MOF has not been proven through thorough and  independent investigations. If indeed misappropriation is proven and wrongdoing had been committed, PBS will in no way condone such actions and will urge the law to take its course,” he said.
